Silver Care Guide

Caring for Your Sterling Silver

Every SANA Jewels silver piece is crafted from 925 sterling silver — 92.5% pure silver alloyed with metals that give it strength for everyday wear. With a little routine care, your silver will keep its bright, reflective finish for years.

Everyday Habits

  • Wear it often. Silver actually tarnishes less when worn regularly, as the natural oils in your skin help keep it bright.
  • Last on, first off. Put your jewelry on after applying lotion, perfume, sunscreen, and hairspray, and remove it before showering, swimming, or exercising.
  • Avoid chemicals. Chlorine, bleach, and household cleaners accelerate tarnish and can damage the finish.

What Causes Tarnish?

Tarnish is a thin, dark layer that forms when silver reacts with sulfur and moisture in the air. It's a natural surface reaction — not a sign of poor quality — and it's fully reversible. It's different from rust: the metal underneath stays intact and bright. A few things speed it up:

  • Humidity and moisture — bathrooms and damp climates accelerate tarnish.
  • Contact with chemicals — perfume, lotion, hairspray, chlorine, and cleaning products.
  • Certain foods and materials — eggs, onions, wool, and rubber bands all release sulfur.
  • Skin chemistry — everyone's skin is slightly different, and some people's natural pH causes faster tarnishing.

Cleaning at Home

For light cleaning, gently rub the piece with a soft, lint-free cloth or a dedicated silver polishing cloth. For a deeper clean, use warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, work gently with a soft brush around detailed areas, rinse thoroughly, and pat completely dry with a soft cloth.

Avoid paper towels and tissues, which can scratch the surface, and never use abrasive cleaners or toothpaste.

Storing Your Silver

Store each piece separately in a cool, dry place — ideally in an anti-tarnish pouch or a lined jewelry box. Keeping pieces apart prevents scratching, and limiting exposure to air and humidity slows tarnish. A small anti-tarnish strip in your jewelry box helps too.

Restoring Brightness

If your silver has tarnished, don't worry — a quality silver polishing cloth will usually restore its shine in minutes. For pieces with gemstones or intricate detail, take care around settings, and when in doubt, a professional cleaning will bring back the original luster safely.
