Fine Jewelry Gifts by Budget: Under $150, Under $300 and Under $500

A good jewelry gift does not have to be expensive, but it should be real: sterling silver or solid gold, with the metal stated plainly. Here is what each budget buys, with pieces from our own shelves at every level.

Under $150: sterling silver, and a little 10K gold

At this level the value is in sterling silver. It is a real precious metal, it polishes back to bright, and rhodium-plated silver stays white without tarnishing. A few pieces of solid 10K gold also sit under $150.

Under $300: solid 14K gold

This is where solid 14K gold starts. Fine chains, pearl studs, small hoops and initial pieces all sit between $120 and $300, and each one is gold all the way through, with the karat in the title.

Under $500: gold with weight, and a first diamond

Between $300 and $500 the gold gets heavier and the designs more considered: bracelets with real presence, statement studs, and a few pieces with a small diamond or gemstone.

Three things to check before you buy, at any price

  • The metal is named. "Sterling silver", "14K gold" or "gold-plated sterling silver", not just "gold tone".
  • The size is stated. Chain length, hoop diameter, ring size. Most of our chains come in more than one length, and rings in half sizes; the Size & Fit Guide helps if you are guessing.
  • The return window. Ours is 14 days, so a gift that is the wrong length or size can be sent back and reordered in the right one. See the return policy.
